To all: MENINGITIS - Today the Providence Journal reported the second death as in as many weeks , this time a 5 year old boy. They reported it would take approximately 48 hours to know if it was Meningitis C which is what they think it was. The boy died within an hour after being admitted to the hospital. There is activity going on at the State level to consider state wide mass inoculation. One real concern is that there isn't a vaccine available for children under 2 years of age.
I is quite apparent that Meningitis C is a very unforgiving, dreadful disease and that the only way to deal with it is with vaccines.
I am sure most of you are aware that NVX has a conjugate meningitis A & C vaccine now in phase II clinical trials in England. The Group C trials are to assess the safety and immunogenicity in infants. About half the cases IN THE U.S. are attributed to group C. NVX is a co- developer with Connaught to develope a group B meningitis conjugate vaccine. Group B accounts for the better part of the rest of the meningitis cases.
NVX holds an exclusive worldwide license on certain conjugate vaccine technology which is used to develope the meningitis vaccines, their Group B Strep (GBS) vaccine, and vaccines for pneumonia, and otitis media. All have completed preclinicals and some are about to begin phase III clinical trials.
Unfortunately, for the little Providence boy and many more children things just aren't moving along fast enough.
Why is it that other technologies seem to keep pace with each other but in the medical world things seem so isolated? I guess it can be accounted for but I do wonder.
