"American Information Systems First Chicago ISP to Support New International Standard-based v.90 Modems "

February 23, 1998

CHICAGO, Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Today American Information
Systems (AIS) became the first Chicago Internet Service Provider (ISP) to
support the new industry standard-based v.90 modems. The new draft
standard, approved by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU),
will ensure greater performance and reliability for users of today's 56k
modems. The v.90 interoperability standard is supported by both major
modem manufacturers 3Com Corporation and Rockwell International. AIS
has been selected beta test 3Com's v.90 modem implementation beginning
this week.

A key benefit of the new standard is that it gives users of either 3Com's x2 or
Rockwell's K56 Flex modems freedom to select an ISP regardless of which
vendor the ISP had previously supported. Although 3Com's v.90 products
can work with 56K products from other manufacturers, AIS supports 3Com
v.90 equipment because of its "backward compatibility" with widely-used
U.S. Robotics 56k x2 modems.
Customers currently using USR x2 can
upgrade to v.90 standard by downloading software from the 3Com Web site
at www.3com.com when available.

"AIS has a strong commitment to providing the highest quality Internet access
and has been first to introduce many recent innovations to Chicago users,"
says Gary Tarr, President & C.E.O. of AIS. "AIS was the first local ISP to
support both x2 and K56 Flex technology and now we're making
preparations for the new v.90 standard. AIS was also first to offer 56k
technology, single channel ISDN service and analog dial-up service in one
package for a very affordable price -- under $20 per month*," says Tarr.
