The Sound of Music has been broadcast on PBS. On November 9, 2018, PBS aired a special presentation of The Sound of Music as part of its Great Performances series. This was a U.S. broadcast of the 2015 U.K. live television adaptation originally produced by ITV. The production starred Kara Tointon as Maria and Julian Ovenden as Captain von Trapp, and was filmed live on sound stages to offer a more naturalistic interpretation of the classic musical. The PBS broadcast was part of Season 46, Episode 3 of Great Performances and ran for approximately two hours. It featured beloved songs such as “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things,” and “Climb Every Mountain.” The episode was also available for streaming on PBS platforms for a limited time following its broadcast. While PBS has not aired the original 1965 film version starring Julie Andrews, this live stage adaptation brought the musical to public television audiences in a fresh and engaging way.
