Analog Devices Introduces World's Smallest Digital Signal Processor Qualcomm CDMA Technology and RIM Wireless Two-Way Pager Benefit from New 16-Bit DSPs Portable Consumer Electronics Get Smaller, More Efficient and Less Expensive NORWOOD, Mass., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) today introduced new members of the ADSP-218x family of digital signal processors (DSP), including the world's smallest DSP. The ADSP-2183, ADSP-2187L and ADSP-2189L DSPs enable portable consumer electronics to be reduced in size while increasing processing speeds, extending operating time and reducing production costs. The ADSP-2183 is approximately 50% smaller than any other DSP available today. Its 144-ball chip array package (CAP) footprint is just one square centimeter and its height is just 1.25 millimeters. The tiny package, coupled with power-efficient 0.8 mA/MIPS performance, has attracted leading portable, equipment makers. According to David Werezak, Vice President of Marketing for Research In Motion (RIM). ''The introduction of ADSP-218x DSPs in a Chip Array Package shows ADI's commitment to provide a highly integrated solution for the portable consumer electronic market.'' The ADSP-2187L and ADSP-2189L offer up to 1.5 Mbits (64 Kwords) of on-chip SRAM (Static Random Access Memory). Utilization of advanced 0.25 micron CMOS SRAM processing makes this level of memory integration affordable as well. The ADSP-2187L operates at 3.3 V and the ADSP-2189L operates at 2.5 V, making these DSPs well suited for use in portable hand-held applications such as two-way paging, Internet appliances and cellular equipment. ''The ADSP-218x architecture provides an efficient and flexible platform for Qualcomm's CDMA Basestations and wireless local loop (WLL) vocoder algorithms. The higher memory and performance of the ADSP-2187L and ADSP-2189L will enable unparalleled levels of channel density,'' said Gil Sih, director of DSP development at Qualcomm. ''The introduction of these new members to the 218x family of 16-bit DSPs is in line with our commitment to continue developing smaller components that enable products to be reduced in size, while becoming more powerful and efficient,'' said Robert B. DeRobertis, Analog Devices' product line manager. ''In addition, advanced manufacturing and assembly technology have allowed ADI to reduce the average selling price by 50 percent for most of the products in the ADSP-218x family.'' ADSP-218x DSP Pricing and Availability There are 36 DSPs available in the ADSP-218x family; prices start as low as $9.00 in 10,000 piece quantities. All processors are binary code compatible. A pin-compatible migration path to 66 MHz allows for easy upgrades and reprogrammability.
