There was a research paper a few years ago that proved what the maximum number of moves to solve a cube is (I think they made it in 36 moves and averaging around 23 moves or something like that).

It sounds like these guy's record is more due to improvements in the robotics and physical components than the algorithm. And this important. I run into so many people who think that just "knowing" is enough and don't appreciate how hard the "doing" part is. The doing part actually requires a fair bit of brain work and talent. Ops is not trivial. And at the end of the day, it is the execution that brings home the bacon. But it doesn't get enough respect.
