Gold reserves are sanctions free, but its role is diminished since no country is now on a gold standard. Like other commodities gold has a negative yield because you have to pay for storage. It’s a small negative yield.
In modern times crypto competes with gold since crypto is vastly more convenient to store and use. Gold is, in fact, a relic, used as money for 5000 years and is still money because it is stored as a central bank reserve.
However, reserves have been modernized. I don’t expect central bank to go back on precious metals standard.
I expect high rates to bring about US recession.
