Date: 98-02-24 08:50:57 EST From: AOL News BCC: LAUP789 Bay Networks Announces 56K ITU Standard Availability on its Access Concentrators SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 1998-- -- Offering testing program, Bay Networks is only vendor that supports either x2 or K56flex while simultaneously supporting V.90 -- In an effort to accelerate widespread compatibility of 56K technology, Bay Networks(R) (NYSE:BAY) today announced that the company has completed extensive testing of draft recommendations for V.90, and will be providing the upgrade to selected customers next quarter. Encouraging compatibility of V.90 modems through a testing program, Bay Networks continues to be the only remote access vendor that supports either x2(TM) or K56flex(TM) while simultaneously supporting the new V.90 protocol. Earlier this month, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Study Group 16 met in Geneva, Switzerland, where the committee determined the draft standard for 56K modems -- officially termed V.90. The ITU committee had been working since April, 1997 to develop a standard for 56K modems -- the fastest analog modems available today. Bay Networks offers a choice of either K56flex or x2 protocols on separate versions of the Bay Networks Adapteon 5399 remote access concentrator (RAC) module and the Bay Networks Adapteon 8000 remote access concentrator (RAC) system. By continuing to support either of the proprietary 56K protocols, Bay's solution does not require the immediate upgrade of users' modems to V.90, thus allowing for a more gradual upgrade program at the customer's choice and convenience. Support for V.90 will be provided by Bay at no cost for existing customers who have either K56flex or x2 products through simple Web-based software downloads. Bay Networks is also announcing that it will collaborate with 3Com to bring 56K industry standard V.90 technology and compatibility to modem users around the world. "Conducting interoperability testing with Bay Networks will certainly reduce the time it takes to deliver V.90-based products to market," said Dale Walsh, vice president of advanced development for 3Com. "Cooperation among industry members is of paramount importance to interoperability testing. We are looking forward to working with Bay as this is a major step toward achieving compatibility across the industry." "Bay Networks builds open, next-generation networks, and accelerating the widespread adoption of standards-based solutions is a key element in our strategy. We're pleased to join with 3Com in advancing interoperability of V.90 modems," said Jonathan Sieg, vice president of Bay Networks Signal Processing Group. "A broad range of interoperable, standards-compliant solutions will give service providers and businesses the ability to quickly roll out 56K technology without worrying about compatibility issues." While Bay Networks continues to be the only vendor that offers a choice between technologies, the company is encouraging widespread compatibility of V.90 modems with a testing program, and invites all modem vendors to participate. All parties interested in testing should e-mail baydsp-open56@baynetworks.com. Bay Networks will provide an account name, password and dial-in number to reach Bay-sponsored remote access servers.
