History weighs on these Eastern lands that we Westerners know little about it. The Black Sea region is an armpit where many cultures met in the past 1,000 years. We westerners forget that Constantinople, todays Istanbul was a center of power. The greatest schism in church history occurred between the church of Constantinople and the church of Rome. While 1054 is the symbolic date of the separation, the agonizing division was six centuries in the making and the result of several different issues. It is the equivalent of the schism between Shia and Sunni Islam. The USSR took care of those lands for 70 years. After USSR debacle it fragmented with lots of suffering and deaths See Yugoslavia. As Russia rebuilt in the 90s and early 2000s, it started fine tunning the map that was drawn by Gorbachev As NATO came to close to comfort, Putin put an end to NATO expansion.
