Steve,

According to PGEN's annual report, the Mercator acquisition was based on their perceived need to develop a larger organization to compete more effectively in genomics:

"Mercator Genetics, Inc., a California genomics company that had recently discovered the genetic basis for an iron overload disease affecting over a million Americans. Mercator had a strong scientific organization with close ties to the Stanford Human Genome Center. Where one company had needs the other had strengths."
