qdog, From InfoWorld"Qualcomm debuts Globalstar mobile phone By Marc Ferranti InfoWorld Electric Posted at 7:07 AM PT, Feb 24, 1998 ATLANTA -- Qualcomm on Monday unveiled here at Wireless 98 a mobile phone to accompany its new Globalstar satellite communications system, as well as a mobile pay phone designed for public events and disaster areas. However, consumers and service providers who want to put the technology to the test may be disappointed, since the products won't be ready until at least the third quarter of this year. Qualcomm's new mobile phone -- to be priced, branded, and distributed by local service providers -- will work with the globe-spanning Globalstar low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications system. The first batch of the 48 satellites that will make up the communications system were launched Feb. 14, from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Though the phones will be available for service providers to test later this year, the system will not be ready for general public use for another year, according to officials. The mobile phone works with Qualcomm's cdmaOne code division multiple access (CDMA) or analog technology. Globalstar, founded by Qualcomm and Loral Space & Communications, will include gateways that will let Globalstar portable phone users connect to global systems for mobile communications networks, public land mobile networks, or directly into the public switched telephone network. The mobile phone will include voice, fax, data, position location, and messaging services, officials said. Qualcomm also announced two versions of a CDMA-based mobile pay phone: the QCT-5000, a cellular version, and the QCT-5200, a Personal Communications Services (PCS) version. The pay phones, designed for outdoor use and due to be released to suppliers in the third quarter of this year, are aimed at public transportation areas, disaster relief areas, and public events. They provide up to 14.4Kbps data transmission rates. Payment methods include coin, credit card, or smart-card operation. The new pay phones will be priced and sold through service providers.
