On the contrary, it is a great analogy. Who is to say that one human being is worth more than another? If you views the athletes as companies, then the team owner (fund manager) is investing in the athletes for future potential gain. If the athlete (company) performs poorly then the returns will not be that good. On the other hand, if they perform very well, then the returns will be worth a lot.

One can assume that Microsoft is a lot like Michael Jordan in that it produces constantly stellar results year after year and hence is worth what investors (team owners) are willing to pay for it.

Once again, simple economics.
