I agree.

But someone might argue that it would favor the well-to-do in going into politics.

Here is an example.

Let's say some poor person -

maybe someone from "The Bronx"

wants to go into politics

even though her only experience is bartending.

To make her more real, let's call her "Sandy".

How can Sandy support herself if pay is minimal?

Or another example - let's call her "Pepsi".

She likes to drink a lot. That costs a lot.
Pepsi started with money, buy her husband keeps buying "hammers"

and has his friends that he lends lots of money to (who never pay back) coming over.

BTW, she eats ice cream - lots of it. How can a token stipend cover that???
Do you expect her to play the stock market to support her living and her husband's fetishes???
