Oklahoma is for the most part poor and rural. Unfortunately, a proven path to power in such areas is what we currently call the "culture wars". Which is actually the same old "us vs. them" thinking of small, isolated tribes. My grandparents lived the last few decades in McCurtain county. Which is emblematic of much of Oklahoma. Its county seat, Idabel made the national news a couple of years ago. The sheriff was typical small town, talking about lynching blacks and killing reporters.

Or Muskogee, OK. They may not smoke marijuana there, but I get the strong impression from driving through, that meth might be a very different thing...

Why, you might ask? While it looks fairly suburban for the most part, the prominent billboards about partner abuse, discouraging the abuse and offering support for the victims, paint a markedly different picture, Being Indian country, alcohol and its abuse is no doubt an issue, also. But casinos are the only economic bright spot in too much of the state. While they may be shiny and glitzy, casinos feed on dreams and desperation. And that rubs off.
