Only one direct mention this year, siliconinvestor.com ,though it was probably mentioned in some article I linked. Whether it becomes the bogeyman depends on how well they fulfill their ambitions. But it appears that they want to consolidate and link as much data in one place as possible. And most of their work is for government. Not necessarily this variant. Any they can profit from.

Oracle, MSFT, AMZN, and the rest have their own empires, and like you say, government contracts, and will naturally try to maximize their involvement. Tie everything together and we'll maybe catch up to the most intrusive imaginable form of en.wikipedia.org as we add the profit motive to the need to keep social order.

Agreed that younger folks need to learn something more useful than sitting on their butts manipulating spreadsheets. Useful trades are more a more interesting way to spend one's working life, and less displaceable. But first priority is to get educated so as to be intellectually nimble if the need arises, and then learn a trade.
