OT/for music mavens who play guitar or are close to someone who does.

Todays experience with top local Luthier, Martin dealer & authorized Martin repair & restoration workshop is worth sharing. Was reminded that all good acoustic guitars need periodic "setup" by an expert guitar repair & restoration shop. (perhaps every 3rd or 4th restringing) to avoid protect against long term damage.

Picked up formerly ailing 00028 VS. Sound chamber identical to Clapton signature 0028 EC. The VS just has a wider fingerboard & fewer frets between the nut & sound hole.

Anyway, after 22 yrs, the spruce top of my instrument developed a nasty crack end the fingerboard in a straight line under the bridge & all the way to the end of the top. Apparently pickup mic pro put in 20 yrs ago was incorrectly installed weakening the top. This + storing the instrument in it's hard shell case without the sound hole cap resulted in humidity being too low which also contributed to the crack. My bad. We're never too old to learn.

Unexpected plus is the restoration expert noticed the strings were higher above the fingerboard than optimal. Amazed how much more playable the guitar is since he adjusted the "action" lower. Close to performance level on challenging finger style songs I had mistakenly thought were too difficult at my age when it turns out most of the problem was the string height.

Really fun to play again. May even do a few open mic sets, at local clubs before yr end. Could cause a stir, as some of my most impressive - borderline virtuoso - material is totally unknown to the younger generation.
