There was a joke in Russia when Carter policies pressured USSR to allow some emigration of minorities (Mostly Jews, but also Armenians and ethnic Germans and politically undesirables " What would you do if they (Russians) open the borders?" "I climb the tree" -Tree? Why?! "I do not want to be tramped" No reliable statistic but out of roughly 2 mln Jews (Some were listed as Russians, in an attempt to avoid or modify discrimination) about 300,000 remained.. (than many Russians tried to prove "Jewish" roots in order to catch a "train" to the West...
