Jim,

No MXi until the 4th quarter? Isn't that a quarter or two late of original projections? Will the MX (Cayenne) precede the MXi?

First of all that comes from a briefing.. if I am right about NSM playing possum I would disregard all their time frames. It may be quiet possible that the GXm and the GXmi(as I call it) (you'll see that in about 2 months I think.. even though it isn't even officially announced yet..) will survive until Q4 and NSM sees no need for the MXi.. you must remember that the MXi is designed to run along side the GXm not replace it at least for a little while.

Second, YES, YES, and YES... but I think I already explained 1 & 2. Now for #3 (If you are wondering where my sudden insight comes from it's from a long night of thinking and reading).

The MX will come out first.. I always figured it would.. I figured it would be wrong to put the same core in 2 products at the same time (since they are both high performance cores).. it would kill the MX.. it is likely that the announcement may mean that the M3 will be ready in early Q1 99. Then it would make sense to use the MX w/ Cayanne for a couple of Qs, work out all the production bugs, then move to the MXi and the M3.. that would be the same generation gap as exists between the cores in the GXm and the M2.

Jim,

MXi was scheduled for 2H/98. 4Q/98 still means 2H/98. :)

My guess is that Cayenne will come out first on socket 7 form. Then, follow with SLOT 2 interface card one or two months later.

MXi has to be debuted along with the brand new motherboards, with all these advanced features, such as 128-bit data bus, 66Mhz PCI, etc. All these would take more time to implement and debug to perfect.

Don't buy Intel processors! In stead, buy the processors from its competitors to keep Intel from long-term monopolizing x86 processor market while maintaining health competition and the PC innovations.

Since they only said 2H 98, technically they are still on target. But when your competitor (Intel) delivers things ahead of schedule, being on schedule means you are still late.

Will the MX (Cayenne) precede the MXi?

I am secretly hoping that the .25 MX part will actually have Cayenne core. But it is still a wishful thinking on my part. I have not seen any public announcement (except a reference in Mircoprocessor Design) about a Cayenne type MX.
