Joe-
Don't listen to anyone about stocks except your father, hopefully he'll explain to you that if a stock has GREAT news, you should sell it.

Buy a mutual fund, buy a high tech mutual fund like PRSCX. Take your time, in a few years, you might have capital to take a position in a company. Rightnow, with $300 bucks, forget trading, forget individual stocks.

$4000, still too little, but a mutual fund.

Here is a tip: avoid the penny stocks. You may think this is the best place for your $300 because you can purchase at least 100 shares this way, but it isn't a good place for your money. Have you invested on paper? I would try this first. Work with intermediate term investments of lets say on the order of 6 months or longer.
