I think you may have something there. We've all heard the phrase, "Madder than a March hare." Could the rabid lion perhaps be the rabbit lion or the lion rabbit or the lyin' rabbit, such as a mad March hare lying in wait? I can see it now, The Million Hare March of the Mad March Hares.
Hmmmm . . . more thoughts to ponder.
