Zeev, All good questions indeed. I had been resisting the xenophobia answer, as it has such awful implications. Nevertheless I could not mount any argument against your summation and believe it is insightful. The power vested in the old guard seems to be nearly immovable. Most of these guys are old enough to be very conscious of WWII, but beyond that, they are responding to centuries of island isolation brought on by defending their shores on more then one occasion, and, believing the best defense is a good offense, defining imperialism in a way that has never before been seen. I have taken your questions to heart and will find a way to pose them without seeming to criticize. Thanks for a very thought provoking post. best, Stitch
