[this is the brief email version from VF's The Hive] Earlier this week, I joined a gaggle of media reporters at Paramount’s offices in Times Square to meet newly minted CEO David Ellison and his executive team. Dressed in a black suit and a shirt with an open collar, Ellison looked nervous as he took the stage for a Q&A session. Reporters did not go easy on Ellison on his first day. When Fox Business Network’s Charlie Gasparino directly asked Ellison whether he had made a side deal with Trump to resolve the lawsuit over 60 Minutes editing, Ellison turned a bit red, referring to previous statements that was “not involved in the settlement in any way.” He later added in response to a similar question that “We are not going to politicize anything today.” Mingling after the Q&A session, I asked Ellison about how CBS News would be able to gain trust in this divided moment. “Half my family is Democrat, half my family is Republican,” he said, adding: “I don’t intend to put my finger on the scale.” Shortly after, Melissa Zukerman, who was recently appointed as chief communications officer, guided Ellison away after a barrage of questions about Trump’s claim that he’d made a side deal with CBS. Now that the protracted takeover is complete, I’ll be watching to see how Ellison and his team work to reorganize the company. In particular, will there be cuts and where? When CBS announced the cancellation of Stephen Colbert ’s show, the decision was described as financial. What will Ellison see as too expensive to continue? Ellison has also promised to push Paramount to use technology in new and innovative ways, and I’ll be watching closely as those ambitions take shape.
