Respond to of 1585144 Tenchu's Thoughts: Yes, MISTER Trump, Slavery Was Indeed BAD Quoting the Orange Boss Baby ...The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, hOw bAd sLaVeRy wAs How does he think we're SUPPOSED to portray slavery in the context of American history? - As a good thing? - As a necessary evil? - As mundane as the ocean tides? - Like a relationship status? "It's complicated ..." The truth is that slavery was an extremely divisive issue back during this nation's founding. It cannot be ignored, and it cannot be whitewashed away. - It was the basis for the 3/5 compromise, where the southern states were allowed to count slaves for the purposes of districting and representation even though those slaves were obviously not allowed to vote. That had a MAJOR impact on representation, much more so than the gerrymandering wars of today. - It was the topic of a huge theological debate, namely whether slavery was supported or not in the Bible. For a brand new nation where 90% of the residents were devout Christians, that kind of matters. - It was the sole reason why abolitionists rose during the 1st half of the 19th century. Their increasing influence flew in the face of "states rights" that the South kept asserting. - It was the reason why America fought the bloodiest war ever on American soil, a war that cost more American lives than all the other wars America fought in combined (up until Vietnam). Yes, MISTER Trump, slavery was indeed that bad. Whatever economic "benefits" slavery provided to the southern agrarian economy were vastly overshadowed by all the negative consequences. And although the South was willing to fight and die to protect their way of life, which included the preservation of that "peculiar institution," hindsight shows that the institution ultimately wasn't worth preserving. The post-war South quickly learned how to sustain their economy without slaves. In any case, if MISTER Trump wants to turn the Smithsonian into a propaganda arm for his regime, fine by me. But MISTER Trump cannot hide the truth. He will fail just like all the other despots in modern history who sought to hide the obvious: Tenchusatsu
