Most species die soon after they reproduce or once they can't reproduce. Humans are a huge outlier in that we live long after we can't reproduce (or shouldn't).

The only evolutionary explanation for this is that grandparents are essential to the survival of the grandkids. They pass on memories and wisdom that would otherwise be out of reach to the younger generation.
