Don...exactly...bright minds think alike. I think ATML wants to put high-end comm stuff in SiGe. Just like Vitesse did for GaAs. And yes, there are also the Nortel, ANAD wireless applications to exploit.

I'm also encouraged to see ATML very recently opened a .25 micron fab to "get with the times." It would be interesting to see if they can combine the .25 micron stuff with the SiGe stuff -- if I am not mistaken, GaAs isn't currently implemented at .25 micron. Is it possible there is another economy here we aren't looking at? That is, perhaps more complex designs are possible on SiGe compared to GaAs due to fab fineness.

I could be "all wet" here on this stuff. The problem is, IBM and Forbes ASAP keep agreeing with me!

If Temic brings out it's line of power amps, it would disprove that idea. It's not to far of a jump from a power amp to a fibre channel driver.

Looks to me like Vitesse also got digital circuit designs from Temic. You might want to read that article carefully a second time, and look at the date.

(from the article)
"as Temic prepares to drop digital circuit designs in favor of mixed-signal RF components aimed at mobile-telecommunications applications."

Notice "PREPARES to drop digital circuit designs" in the sentence. That article was written in January 98 I think. This means that ATML very likely also got all the digital design stuff from Temic; i.e., they didn't shred the digital circuit plans a month before ATML bought them out!
