Interfax-Kazakhstan, Alma-Ata 24 Feb 98 President Nursultan Nazarbayev has welcomed the results of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's mission to Baghdad, Interfax-Kazakhstan news agency reported. In a statement issued on 24th February, Nazarbayev praised "the UN chief's power of diplomacy and the goodwill of the Iraqi leadership" , and said that, since the start of the UN-Iraqi standoff, Kazakhstan had favoured a diplomatic solution. "We underlined the special role of the United Nations in settling the situation peacefully, calling on the Iraqi leadership to comply fully with the UN Security Council resolutions," Nazarbayev's statement said.
