Roy, I certainly agree with you that the engineers at Brocade are very competent. I met some of the team at Interop and was really impressed.

The problem that I have with Brocade, is Brenda C. I think she has went way overboard in some of the claims in the press releases, to the point that some of the assertions were simply untrue, and it reflected quite negatively on Ancor. Furthermore, I think she abused her position has chairmen of the FCA to shamelessly hype Brocade, which hurt a lot of other companies including Ancor.

So, does it make me happy when I see the misteps. Basically, yeah. The reason is because I think the hype was unnecessary. We are really early in the cycle, and there is going to be enough business for several switch vendors, and several hub vendors. I don't have any respect for vendors who feel a need to bad-mouth the competition. But that seems to be a silicon valley sport based upon what I have been reading. It may be due to the fact that so much money is being thrown in there - I think they have really lost perspective. Of course, Steve O'hara made some claims about the growth in FC in 97 that in retrospect were truly preposterous. Under-promise/over-deliver should be the mantra for everyone.

The people who win are going to be the ones who deliver compelling business solutions at the best value. Their energies are much better spent making the pie bigger right now instead of knifing the competition.

That doesn't mean that you shouldn't try to differentiate your products. I think it was a fairly brilliant move for Brocade to push A/L in an attempt to freeze the oems decision cycles until they got a more competitive product out. I think class 1 is going to be important, so I am glad ANCR has stuck with it so far.

IMHO, bp
