Dell Japan-Cuts Notebook Prices.

Dell Japan Cuts Notebook Prices for Second Time in Feb.
February 23, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Dell Computer Corp. of Japan announced that it had cut the prices of all models of Inspiron 3000 Series PCs by a maximum of 6 percent, following its Feb. 2 reduction of prices of the Inspiron series notebook PCs for private and SOHO customers.
Dell explained that the decline in the cost of parts procurement is one factor for its recent price cuts.

Dell appears to be aiming at improving its price-competitiveness as part of its overall marketing strategy. Several leading PC makers released notebook-type products directly after Dell's announcement of its Feb. 2 price cut.

The biggest price cut was for the Inspiron 3000 M266XT Standard model, the high-end model of the Inspiron series with a 266MHz Pentium MMX. It is priced at 389,000 yen (US$3,090), after a 6 percent reduction. The Inspiron 3000 M266XT Standard has a 512KB secondary cache memory, a 48MB standard main memory, a 3.2GB HDD and Windows 95 pre-installed, a 13.3-inch color thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel (1,024 x 768 and 65,536 colors), and a 20x CD-ROM drive.

The Insprion 3000 M266XT Super model costs 429,700 yen (US$3,410), after a 4.4 percent price reduction. It has a 4.0GB HDD with Word 97, Excel 97, Outlook 97, and Bookshelf Basic pre-installed, and a secondary battery.
