I disagree. Does you analysis of SPARC go any deeper than what you've presented here? Do you have any information backing up your claim that Solaris will not be native/optimized on Merced?

Do you think Microsoft's NT will be any more native or optimized on Merced? On what basis?

Just My Humble Opinion and Questions.

>Solaris will support MERCED but will NOT be NATIVE on it, i.e
>Optimized.

What in the world do you mean by this? Of course it will be
"native". What's the alternative? Are you suggesting they're
going to build a sparc emulator on Merced?

As for optimization, Sun will get as much performance as it can
out of any platform it ports to. This has been the case with
x86 all along - Solaris outperforms other OS's on identical
intel hardware.

here's one real-world example (there are others)

>Sparc is a luxury they cannot afford anymore.

SPARC may be on the verge of becoming a cash cow.
The SPARC core is already part of several MPEG2 encoder
and decoder designs that are targeted for consumer
electronics and PCs. It is also part of SA's
set top box that could end up with as much as 50% of
the cable set top box market.
