The attack on the CIA compound at the Benghazi US embassy annex exposed a weapons trafficking operation to support the war against Syria. Allied governments maintained separate armories near the compound to store the weapons for their shipment through Tripol to Ceyhan, Turkey and into Syria. Many of the fighters and their weapons also made their way back to their countries of origin in Central Africa. US and NATO were warned back in 2012 hat there would be a backlash or blowback when the foreign fighters returned from Libya and Syria.
