Speaking alongside the E5 defence ministers, John Healey branded Russia’s actions “dangerous, reckless and unprecedented” which reached a “new level of hostility against Europe”. He continued: “We saw across Nato’s eastern border a serious violation of Polish airspace deep enough for Warsaw Airport to be closed and NATO jets shooting down Russian drones in what is the first defensive action of its kind since Vladimir Putin launched his full-scale attack on Ukraine.” Reaffirming the alliance’s commitment to help protect Ukraine, he said the UK must “look at options to bolster” Nato’s protection of Poland’s airspace and said Putin was “testing us”. At least four out of 19 drones were shot down by Polish, Dutch and Italian fighter jets. It was the first time in the Nato alliance’s history that forces have engaged with Russia militarily. Moscow’s defence ministry has insisted it had “no plans” to strike Poland, however European and Nato leaders have accused Russia of deliberately targeting the country in order to probe the military alliance’s response. The strike has intensified calls to create a so-called “drone wall” on Nato’s eastern flank to defend its border against future Russian aggression. telegraph.co.uk
