I had discussions with a politician about motorcycle helmet laws about 20-years ago.

Their point was that people should have the freedom to be stupid if they are the only ones at risk.

My point was that when the motorcycle rider gets splattered all over the highway, it's taxpayer funded police and fire fighters who have to come to their aid. Furthermore, if they have a debilitating brain injury, the public picks up the tab for that. Having the rider wear a helmet helps shield the taxpayer from monetary liability.

I'm not sure I made my point very well or defended it well. Looking at it from a drug legalization standpoint, you could make the argument that legalization creates a greater liability on the taxpayer (it actually doesn't if it is combined with treatment).
