Just because it's not happening to you doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Some of my best friends are hardcore conservatives. We remain friends because they are decent people; they are honest, kind, and contribute to the welfare of others e.g. taking kids on hiking trips and protecting environment (not in the liberal way, but effective in their own ways - and that is all that matters). Most importantly, we are friends because we treat differences of opinion as just that; differences of opinion. I don't think they dumb or evil or whatever because they vote differently than I do, and neither do they think ill of me because of politics. One of them has a taxidermy business in upstate NY. Recently when we were having political discussion, he said something similar to what what you just said. To paraphrase, he said that we live in different neighborhoods and have had different experiences and as a result what matters to him is not the same as what matters to me and we have different priorities. In other words, he understood me and I understood him, but we are not exposed to the same issues. I am good with that. That is how it should be, and in a proper democracy, this will nudge policies towards a "happy medium" that reflects the greatest good for the greatest number of people while everyone's fundamental rights are protected. What I have contempt for are the people who make their living off polarizing the society and demonizing the other side. To me, these people are social parasites; they harm the very society that hosts them for their own selfish gains. I cut such people zero slack. It's not about them being liberal or conservative; it's about them being social parasites.
