The crucifixion was not a divine command for men to commit murder, but God’s providence allowing human sin to be the instrument of redemption. Christians celebrate sacrificial love shown in death, and triumphant life shown in the Resurrection. Without the Cross there is no Resurrection; without the Resurrection the Cross is meaningless. Aquinas holds both together, you can’t separate the two, but you also can’t reduce it to death alone.
