FYI, only full year results are audited by outside accountants. If there is considerable disagreement with accounting policies of a company then the auditors approval is not granted (and watch out for the stock when that news gets out). Quarterly results are compiled by internal accountants who generally have no ability to contact the outside world as their actions are controlled by the CEO and CFO.

Regarding prior year earnings, this is a somewhat gray area in regards to forecasting future cost levels versus incoming revenues. Many investors (and company execs) have been blindsided when assumptions have not come true (healthcare, movie studios, etc or anything with a "long tail" to a product).

I don't know where to place the blame on OXHP, although it appears that Wiggins at the very least screwed up the operating side of the business or overanticipated potential cost savings.
