This guy claims you can still see out even in the darkest state. I really don't trust anything out of China
youtube.com

Maybe; but just looking at this picture, I imagine it's blue against the sun. Chinese advertising is different than outside China. IF these audis are for the export market, then perhaps we'll see. I recall very similar statements from Halio and View.

Automotive models using Ambilight smart glass include:
  • Xiaomi YU7 Max: Features an Ambilight-developed EC smart-dimming sunroof that provides 99.85% light blocking and 99.9% UV/IR ray blocking in bright sunlight.
  • NIO (2024 models): Includes the ET7, EC7, ET5T, and EC6, which are equipped with black EC smart sunroofs. The NIO ES8 flagship SUV also uses Ambilight's EC smart-dimming side windows.
  • Audi E5 Sportback: Its high-end trims come standard with an Ambilight EC smart-dimming sunroof.
  • Zeekr 007 GT: Uses Ambilight's smart-dimming technology.
  • BYD and Avatr: Other vehicle models from these brands also feature Ambilight's smart glass solutions.
  • Multiple NEV models: As of mid-2025, Ambilight's technology has been deployed in over 20 New Energy Vehicle (NEV) models.

The only name I think the average person would know of is Audi. Did Audi recognize that PDLC had too many problems and going with the cheaper Ambilight solution would address this? Don't know.

For me it's chicken and egg. SPD becomes cheaper as more adoptions and large production model use it.
But It only has 2 current models in production and we know of one model that is mid-priced coming, which might not lower costs. Thus we lose to PDLC or other cheaper solution.

I don't think we have forever to gain models in automobile sector. If cheaper works, we could go the way of Betamax.

View had Soft Bank billion dollar investment allowing it to subsidize its installation, in hopes, I would imagine to have several examples of adoption of its EC architectural projects. It declared bankruptcy, but I think they are reorganizing.

If REFR or Gauzy got a huge influx of cash then REFR could raise the amount that takes the licensee over the minimum royalty payment and not changing that payment and perhaps it could lower costs. Have a finite time frame to encourage licensees to expedite projects.

Not likely to happen, but lowering price is what needs to happen. Maybe offer GM a special introductory price for the models under consideration so the more models added woulld significantly lower initial cost.

Pipe dreams possibly but I think Corvette could be or could have been secured with an offer of certain amount of roofs at a lower cost.

In sales we used to call it loss leader.
