Under the proposed deal, TikTok’s video-recommendation algorithm would remain owned by ByteDance, the Chinese internet company that currently operates TikTok globally. The new U.S. company would lease the algorithm from ByteDance, and it would be revised using American TikTok users’ data.

So Tiktok US is renting the algorithm from Bytedance. Do they get to reverse engineer it? Who owns any improvements? Does Bytedance retain a backdoor, and does US tiktok care if they discover one? How is US user data any more secure than it was before from Chinese exploitation? Not to mention the new lessees are just as or more anxious than Bytedance to invade their users' privacy.
