Jim,
Other than an integrated chip the easiest and cheapest way for boxmakers to make sub zero PCs would be to use Pentium MMXs provided Intel would knock the price down to say $80...with Intel's cost being under $40 on .25u. But Intel want's to phase out socket 7 and push the Pentium II...so they are gonna castrate it so they can make it for $40-$45 and think the public will think they are getting a "real" Pentium II rather than a castrated one that is actually slower than an "other" chip. Can they do it? Well, they have the production and the marketing clout...and some benchmarks that will show it's not such a dog. So...I suspect the Covington won't be a bust...buy it make not be a great success either. Then again, Intel may not want a success as much as it wants a stop gap.
