I agree with your point that government data is not reliable anyway. However, markets do react to it.

It is important to understand that big money does not place bets on the what news itself means - believable or not -, but on how they think others will react to it. That is probably because they think they are smarter than typical market participants. So, one often sees an immediate correlation to "official" government economic reports and a market response despite the trend for substantive revisions later. Of course, revisions cause another round of the same thing.
