Re. Nothing in that last sentence tells me the dividend is safe and the wording certainly could let the conspiracy theorist in me think it could well be cut in the name of "sustainable long term growth".

Yup, that's what I thought too. Like I said earlier, I will hold on to rest of my VZ position till ex-div (in a few days) and then slowly but aggressively trim out of it.
