Newsom Claps Back At Trump Calling Dems ‘Insurrectionists’ With 2 Telling Pictures

Story by Taiyler S. Mitchell

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) shut down President Donald Trump’s recent claim that Democrats “are like insurrectionists” on Tuesday.

“We got a bill passed that we really — I said, ‘Let’s see if we can get it all done, because these Democrats are like insurrectionists, OK?’ They’re so bad for our country, their policy is so bad for our country,” Trump told reporters during a press conference on Tuesday.

He was praising House Speaker Mike Johnson (R) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R) for helping his “ big, beautiful” megabill pass in July despite opposition from Democrats and a couple of defecting Republicans.

Newsom responded to Trump’s “insurrectionists” line on X with two pictures of the violent Jan. 6 Capitol riot in 2021 that Trump supporters enacted in 2021 after Trump lost the 2020 election to former President Joe Biden.

Deputy Chief of Staff for policy Stephen Miller also made a similar claim on Monday during a CNN appearance.

“When in our history have we tolerated unlawful riotous assemblies night after night around FBI buildings, or ATF buildings, or DEA buildings?” Miller told journalist Boris Sanchez. “This is the textbook definition of domestic terrorism.”

In a post on X, Newsom also responded with a picture of the Capitol riot.

Trump pardoned the 1,500 rioters when he returned to office in January.

Newsom’s posts come as he and his team continue to implement his social media strategy, where he seemingly mocks President Trump and taunts the Republican Party.

Newsom explained this strategy on The Late Show when prompted by host Stephen Colbert late last month.

“The strategy is inspiration, desperation, right?” Newsom said. “The two driving forces of life.”

“Everything we were doing to try to break through wasn’t working anymore. And so we decided to do something — to your point — novel, called humor. And, I gotta say, oftentimes Democrats, we’re a little — we’re not as humorous as we should be. We can be a little stiff. And so we thought we’d have some fun with it. But I never imagined it would break through like it has and get under the skin of the president of the United States,” he added.

He also explained that his strategy has earned a less-than-favorable response from the right because “we put a mirror up to Trump and the absurdity of what’s going on in this country. The absurdity of Donald Trump. The absurdity of these networks playing into it.”
