So let's say buy back your 170 and go out maybe 2 weeks and sell 172.50 for hopefully the same price, and you made $2.50 on the stock, even if rolling did not net any money.

That's what I usually do, but to get only $2.50 higher strike (with no premium received) it took 4-5 weeks forward roll. I sorta wanted to have this option expire the week before earnings. Maybe then a one week roll (at the same strike) will get a decent payout.

It's almost not worth it, but I thought lets do it for a while. I guess as long as the roll makes more than 10% annualized it seems OK. And as you point out, if AMD dips a bit more the $170 could easily be closer to at the money allowing the higher strike roll then that you mentioned.
