Yeah, I agree on all of that. Don't forget your cables. Your stereo is only as good as its weakest link. Back in the day, it was recommended that speakers be about 40% of the total cost of your system. I was kind of there with all my McIntosh stuff I bought when a dealer was forced to give up their franchise (they had the audacity of having a 10% off sale, which was prohibited in their franchise agreement-only sales at list price). I got all my stuff at half off retail and had $10k worth of stuff for $5k (it would be $30k in today's money).
