Nickel Belt: The Ford government has passed Bill 56, locking in a provincewide ban on municipal speed cameras in Ontario. The legislation was pushed through quickly, despite strong objections from safety advocates who say the devices help reduce collisions.

Premier Doug Ford has long dismissed speed cameras as a “cash grab,” and the new bill cements their removal as provincial policy.

The ban still requires royal assent before taking effect, but once in force, municipalities will no longer be able to install or operate new automated speed enforcement cameras.
