According to an NPR interview he said the effect was created by a prop man under the table with a rubber tube and a cigarette. I love AI :)

1982 - 1987 I worked for SMBX as a facilities manager at the their Chatsworth, CA manufacturing buildings.

Symbolics

The requirement of teflon coated computer wire in plenum ceilings always perplexed me. If it did burn it was more toxic and dangerous than the standard PVC cable if it burned.

Working for a bleeding edge company like SMBX (Think early AI) was an experience.
