reason they're bothering is that a P55C doesn't run very well (if at all) on a 100 mhz bus.

Contract to what you believe, P55C runs on 100Mhz bus speed quite well. Among all processors on socket 7, P55C is to be benefited the most from the 100Mhz bus speed and the larger (as large as 2MB) L2 cache due to its slow memory speeds and the Alpha technology architectures.
