Blaise wanted to have his cake and eat it too. He was a devout Catholic and even had a deeply religious experience which prompted him converting to it. Devoted a good chunk of his life coming up with arguments like this.

This one assume the tenets of Christianity, or at least certain dark back alleys of it, are the only possibility. He tries to dismiss not believing in Christianity as meaningless. Which is a very Catholic-centric view.

It is called "motivated reasoning".
