When Boeing merged with MacDonnell, the new management rooted out the engineers in management and replaced them with beancounters. Which might work for a janitorial services company, but it didn't work well for Boeing. ROI went up until the chickens came home to roost.

The flat bottom on the 737 MAX engines are emblematic of everything that has gone wrong. When the nacelles threaten the tarmac, it is past time to do a redesign.
