YORE given the news -- is there a price you would buy SPTR at...........how low will it go given statements ?
STURBRIDGE, Mass., Feb 25 (Reuters) - SpecTran Corp, which develops, manufactures and markets glass optical fibers and fiber optic products, on Wednesday said its 1998 earnings could drop by as much as 30 percent from 1997, due to significantly increased development costs and lower selling prices.
SpecTran also said that the market for standard communication fiber has become highly competitive as a result of increased industry-wide capacity. This has caused a drop in prices, which is expected to hurt SpecTran's gross profit margin.
Economic conditions in Asia will likely reduce demand in that targeted market for SpecTran's single-mode fiber in 1998, the company said. Further, the strength of the U.S. dollar also puts further pressure on the gross profit margin for sales abroad.
