Just speculation on my part but I would guess there is both professional and amateur shorting. The professional strategy would be the following:

1. Find a volatile stock (like Radica) and play it.

2. Time short points when stock is going ga ga.

3. Cover during correction taking approx 20% gain and then get out of the way, letting stock run up.

4. Repeat step 2.

My guess is the pro shorts are playing the volatility and making $, attracting amateur shorts who are losing their shirts.
