So what are Trump's tariffs really about?

I would argue they are simply Trump's preferred cudgel to beat up people, that is simple and without congressional restraint.

He told PM Carney, that he liked them because trade deals were too complicated. Carney relied:" complexity is in the eye of the beholder".

He is a classic bully and likes beating up people. especially the weak, just like Putin, as it gives him pleasure e.g. killing people in boats without due process. He said:' we are not going to declare war, we are just going to kill them, like dead."

He knows full well, tariffs are just a regressive sales tax on the people, especially the poor, but he doesn't care one bit, just like he doesn't care about all the starving people he cut off food aid for by cutting USAID.

And he knows the foreign countries are not paying the tariffs, but he knows he can tell that lie to the MAGA and they will believe him.

Look how he uses them day after day to punish people, nations or companies.

He got pissed about the Canadian ad and so he put an additional 10% tariff on them. 50% on Brazil, and 50% on India, for what reason?

And I expect another 10% on Canada if the Blue Jays win the series-lol!

He is truly a monster of epoch proportions, and the damage he is doing to the country, indeed the world, is a like great a plague, famine or war.

In order to understand Trump one needs to understand how evil he is.He is running a criminal organization, and we can see it everywhere we look.A good comparison to Trump would be Stalin or Putin.

A good comparison to Trump would be Stalin or Putin.

Putin more than Stalin. However vicious and cruel he was, Stalin did have a streak of pragmatism. He didn't try to take the rest of Europe and stopped at the agreed upon lines. I am not sure a Trump or Putin would. Stalin was bright enough to realize that going against the US in Europe would have been a disaster. Especially without the US flow of goods. Putin and Trump probably would convince themselves that a brutal and all out surprise attack would backfoot the US and scare them into submission. What would have happened was a mushroom blossoming over Moscow instead of capitulation, a fact he no doubt took to heart, given he no doubt knew about the plans for Berlin.
